The initials MCSE stand for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. The MCSE certification authenticates and recognises competency in specialists who examine the business needs and design the communications for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server System.

As the MCSE credential is designed for the information technology professional who works in a complex IT environment of medium to large size. It is expected that an MCSE applicant must have at least a years experience as an executive, managing a network operating system in a location which has: -

  • Not less than 200 supported users.
  • System services such as web hosting, desktop management, messaging, file and print, proxy server, firewall and dial-in server.
  • Needing to connect to the offices of individuals, remote locations and business system to the Internet.

Additionally, an MCSE candidate is expected to have at least one year of practice in implementing and administering a desktop operating system and network infrastructure design.

For this new Windows 2000 certification MCSE applicants need to pas two electives and five core exams. Candidates who have passed all three of the Windows NT 4.0 can take the "fast track" exam, which requires sitting only four out of the five exams. This exam has no charge for the first attempt only.
